The most common video content frustrations and how to beat them

What part of making videos do you find most frustrating?

If you’ve ever tried to create video content for your business, you already know that it’s not as simple as “Just hit record on your phone!”

Recording and creating video content includes:

    • Planning
    • Filming
    • Editing
    • Uploading

And that’s before you even get to the captions, repurposing, and distribution strategy…

But when we asked business owners what frustrates them most about video creation, the answer was clear: editing.

Editing topped the charts with 40% of our research participants as the #1 video content pain point.

And honestly? We get it. Editing is where good intentions go to die.

But editing doesn’t have to be a nightmare. And the real trick to making it easier starts before you ever open an editing tool.

Let’s break it all down and give you some practical ways to make the most frustrating parts of the video process way less painful.

Editing: The bit everyone hates (but doesn’t have to)

Let’s start with an important truth bomb – editing is a skill. It’s not something you can expect to master just because you downloaded an app and watched half a tutorial on YouTube.

Even with AI tools at your fingertips, good editing still needs a human who knows what to cut, what to leave in, and how to tell a compelling story with your content.

That’s why our video editors use AI tools as part of the process, but they’re still the ones steering the ship. The software doesn’t magically do it all for you, and when it tries, the results are usually… meh.

So what makes editing so annoying?

Well, a lot of it comes down to what happens before you start editing.

Let’s say you wing it on camera. You ramble for 10 minutes trying to capture a 40-second video.

Now you’ve got a mess of footage, and you’re hoping to somehow carve a coherent message out of it. That’s a recipe for a frustrating edit.

But now imagine this…

    • You’ve planned your hook.
    • You’ve got a bullet-pointed prompt list.
    • You hit record and nail it in 60 seconds.

Boom! Editing that down to 40 seconds? Easy. You’re basically trimming the edges and adding captions. Done.

Editing pain = a planning problem.

The more you plan upfront, the less you suffer in the edit.

Planning what to say: The silent struggle for many businesses

Not far behind editing on the list of frustrations? Planning what to say.

About 1 in 4 people told us this was their biggest struggle, and honestly, it makes sense. Because here’s what no one tells you: being an expert makes it harder to come up with content.

Why? Because you forget what it’s like not to know all the stuff you know. You’ve spent years mastering your craft. But your audience? They’re only just getting started.

That gap in perspective means you skip over all the brilliant, helpful, simple stuff that your audience would love – because you assume it’s too basic. Or not worth talking about.

Spoiler: it is.

In fact, that’s the kind of content people want. Content that breaks things down. Content that helps them see things differently. Content that solves problems they didn’t even realise had a solution.

So, how do you figure out what to say in your video content?

Here’s our go-to list for pulling out the kind of content ideas that your audience will genuinely care about:

    • Methodologies
Got a unique way of doing things? Break it down. Explain each stage of your process in a short, punchy way.

    • Experience
What have you learned the hard way? Share those lessons – it builds trust and relatability.

    • Client results
Talk about what worked for your clients. What was the challenge? What did you do? What changed? Real stories are gold.

    • Mistakes
Don’t pretend to be perfect; no one is! People love hearing about how you survived a complete shambles of a situation and what you learned from it.

    • Values and philosophy
What do you believe in? What makes you different? What do you care about that others might overlook?

    • Mission
Why do you do what you do? What drives you to show up? This kind of content builds emotional connection.

Start jotting these down, and before long, you’ve got a list of raw video ideas you can keep coming back to.

Then it’s just about adding a little magic dust…

Good Video = Value + Entertainment

A useful video is great. A useful video that doesn’t bore people to tears? Even better.

It’s not just about what you say, it’s about how you say it.

This doesn’t mean breaking into ‘stand-up’ mode, or adding 60s Batman-style sound effects and graphics!

It just means remembering that you’re talking to other humans through the screen. Your information connects you with logic. Developing an emotional connection needs a sprinkling of this:

    • Tell stories
Even short stories. A 20-second anecdote can help your audience feel the point you’re making, not just hear it.

    • Start with a hook
This is your opening line. Make it specific, make it bold, and make people want to stick around and fulfil their curiosity.
Instead of: “In this video, I’ll be talking about productivity.” Make it: “Here’s the productivity hack I stole from my 8-year-old.”

    • Use a varied tone of voice
Nobody wants to listen to a monotone lecture. So don’t try to eliminate your usual way of speaking. Emphasise certain words, play with your pacing, let your personality show through.

    • Add humour, if it feels natural
A light moment or sarcastic comment can go a long way. Don’t force it, but don’t hold back if it comes naturally.

Recording yourself: not exactly ‘fun’ (yet!)

Recording yourself on camera came in just behind planning, with 21% of people saying it’s the bit they hate the most.

Honestly? That makes sense, too. You’ve got to deal with how you look, how you sound, the lighting, the background… oh, and you have to remember what to say without looking like you’re reading a ransom note.

But here’s what we tell our clients: it’s awkward until it’s not.

The first few times might feel cringey. But over time, you will get better. You will get faster. You will look more natural.

Here’s how to make it easier:

    • Use prompts, not scripts
Full scripts are tempting, but they make you stiff and unnatural. A few bullet points keep you on track without taking the life out of your delivery.

    • Practice, then record
Say it out loud once or twice before you hit record. Get the rhythm in your head. Then roll camera.

    • Keep the first few takes
Don’t wait for perfection. Record three takes max, pick the best one, and move on. Done is better than perfect.

    • Film in batches
Once you’re warmed up, keep going. Record 3-4 videos in a row while you’re in the zone.

Your big first step is definitely ‘feel the cringe and do it anyway.’ But incorporating these practical tips into your filming routine will quickly make it feel more natural and maybe, dare we suggest, a bit exciting!
